About Gilbert & Batchelor Family History
The Gilbert family line (my paternal line) traces back mainly in the London
area, but prior to 1820's the family came from the town of Frome in the county
of Somerset. Names include Hazelwood/Hazlewood/Haslewood, Hems, Hudson,
Saunders/Sanders, Flanders, Chandler. Most of these names were again London
based, covering Clerkenwell, Lambeth, Camberwell, Holborn, Bethnal Green and
Islington, to name just a few. Farther back in history, the different families
appear to come from Crondall in Hampshire, Blackburn in Lancashire, Kings
Langley in Hertfordshire, and of course Frome in Somerset - where the Gilbert
line has been traced back to the 1770's.
The Batchelor family line (my maternal line) traces back to Scottish origins,
via Singapore. The city of Dundee in Angus and the town of Cupar in Fife,
feature predominantly in the ancestry. Also the name Calder (my grandmothers'
maiden name) had Scottish roots. From Aberdeen City in more later times but
prior to that the families came from the villages of Birse, Aboyne and
Kincardine O'Neil - all in Aberdeenshire. There is also a Norfolk link
with the Calder family, in the villages of Foulsham and Bintry, and
some of the smaller surrounding hamlets. My great grandfather came down from
Aberdeenshire and married a Norfolk girl before finally settling in south
London.
In my quest for the family history, I have spent time in Foulsham and Norwich
doing research, and every year I visit Scotland, and have visited all the
places my ancestors came from in Dundee, Birse & the surrounding areas and
also Cupar.
I hope those who visit my site will learn and enjoy the history of my family.
This is a 'living' site so it will be updated and amended quite frequently.
Photo's will be added in time so check back often if you have an interest in
any of my ancestors. Also copies of certificates and censuses will be added in
due course. Please feel free to sign my guest book.
